Gemstone Necklaces
For thousands of years men and women all over the world used to decorate their bodies with the means of different natural objects. At first there were claws, bones and teeth of animals. Not it is mostly gemstones, corals, pearls that are polished and set into different precious metals like gold, silver and platinum.
As you understand all gemstone necklaces may vary in size and length. Though they have only several standard lengths there are some ways to help you visualize how a gemstone necklace will fit. There are no people with average overall build and therefore different necklaces will fit you differently.
In the markets or online stores you can usually find adjustable gemstone necklaces that are pretty convenient. You can always change their look according to your appearance. They have some extra links at the end for clasping one on the other. These gemstone necklaces are the best choices when you are making a gift and are not sure which length will be more suitable.
Distinguish short and long length gemstone necklaces. Short ones are 15 – 16 inch long and are called chokers. They lay just above your collarbone, accenting your neckline. There are necklaces shorter than these – they are called collars and are wrapped around your neck. Between the longer necklaces we can meet the following ones: princess necklace, matinee length necklaces, opera necklace, lariats, ropes, bibs, torsade necklaces, graduated and uniform. Princess gemstone necklaces are about 18 inches long and are designed to hang below the collarbone. Matinee length necklaces are about 24 inches and are designed to extend the breast area. An opera gemstone necklace length is longer than the others. It has 28 inches and more. Ropes and lariats considered to be very long necklaces. They can be worn as-is or may be wrapped to create a simple two-stranded choker. Some of them are unattached at one end. This is made for the future wearer possibility to tie and knot them in different ways to suit different styles. Bibs are called single necklaces with the multiple strands with lengths varied. Torsade is a necklace in which several strands of cultured pearls are twisted together and held with a special clasp. Gemstone necklaces with cultured stones of gradually increasing size with the smallest at the back and the largest at the center are called graduated necklaces. Uniform is a necklace where all of the gem stones are of the same size (however there could be a slight difference between the center and end cultured pearls).
The one thing that is usually not included in the overall gemstone necklace length is the clasp. This clasp holds a necklace in place and is usually three-fourths of an inch or more. When you are purchasing the necklace using online services, please read the descriptions attentively to see whether the clasp length is included.
Do not forget to carry your gemstone necklace to your jeweler at least once a year for restringing. That must be done because all the cosmetics and every day wear can seriously damage or scratch the threads.
